Salisbury is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire with a population of 1,422 according to the 2020 census. The area spans 39.8 square miles, encompassing both forested land and waterways that have long been central to its character and economy. The town's highest point lies along its western boundary, where the eastern slopes of Mount Kearsarge reach 1,910 feet above sea level. The Blackwater River flows through the western side of town, creating a popular recreation area known as The Bay, a natural lake-like section that draws visitors for fishing and outdoor activities. The Blackwater eventually flows southward as a tributary of the Contoocook River, part of the larger Merrimack River watershed.
Salisbury's history reflects the shifting geography of colonial New England. Originally granted as Baker's Town in 1736 while still part of Massachusetts, the town changed hands and names multiple times as boundaries were redrawn. After New Hampshire's border with Massachusetts was established, the Masonian proprietors re-granted the land in 1749 as Stevenstown, named after Colonel Ebenezer Stevens of Kingston. Settlement began around 1750, and the town was later known by other names before adopting Salisbury upon its incorporation in 1768. This name has endured for more than two and a half centuries, establishing the identity by which residents know their community today.
