Bow is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, with a population of 8,229 at the 2020 census, reflecting growth from 7,519 in 2010. The town's name derives from a bend, or "bow," in the Merrimack River, which forms its northeastern border. Originally granted to Jonathan Wiggin and others in 1727, Bow initially covered nine square miles but faced a complicated territorial history involving competing claims from New Hampshire and Massachusetts authorities. The boundary dispute was not fully resolved until after the colonies separated, with the final line between New Hampshire and Massachusetts established in 1741. Over time, Bow yielded more than two-thirds of its original territory to neighboring towns of Concord, Pembroke, and Hopkinton through boundary settlements made between 1759 and 1765. The first census in 1790 counted 568 residents. Today, Bow spans 28.5 square miles and is served by two state routes and two interstate highways. The town's highest elevation is Picked Hill at 915 feet above sea level. In recent decades, Bow has developed as a suburban community with three public schools, including Bow High School built in 1997. The town gained attention in 2019 when climate activists protested the Merrimack Station coal-fired power plant, which operated along Bow's eastern border before closing permanently in September 2025 for conversion to clean energy production. Bow has produced several notable residents throughout its history, including Mary Baker Eddy, founder of the Church of Christ, Scientist.
