Epsom is a town in Merrimack County in central New Hampshire, located eleven miles east of Concord, the state capital. Incorporated in 1727, the town takes its name from Epsom in Surrey, England. The landscape, dotted with several small mountains including Fort Mountain at 1,413 feet, proved suitable for early agricultural pursuits. By 1859, when the town's population had reached 1,366 residents, Epsom supported two gristmills and two sawmills that processed the grain and timber from the surrounding area. The town sits within the Merrimack River watershed and is drained by the Suncook River and its tributary, the Little Suncook River. Spanning 34.6 square miles, Epsom is bordered by six adjacent municipalities and connected by three state routes and two U.S. routes that cross through town. The 2020 census recorded a population of 4,834 residents. The town's history includes a significant tragedy on April 24, 1944, when a Consolidated B-24 Liberator crashed into a mountain, killing all ten occupants aboard. Over the centuries, Epsom has been home to several notable figures, including a governor of New Hampshire, a brigadier general, a federal judge, and an inventor.
