Warner is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire with a population of 2,937 according to the 2020 census. Originally granted in 1735 as "Number One" by Massachusetts Governor Jonathan Belcher, the town went through several name changes before being incorporated as Warner on September 3, 1774, named after Jonathan Warner, a leading Portsmouth citizen and relative of Governor John Wentworth. It was one of the last towns established under English provincial rule prior to the American Revolution.
The town developed into a prosperous farming community producing meats, dairy goods, vegetables, hay, and apples. The Warner River and its tributaries powered numerous mills and factories. By the mid-nineteenth century, Warner's industries expanded to include sawmills, gristmills, paper mills, clothing factories, a cabinet manufacturer, and a bottle manufacturer. By 1885, the town supported a bedstead factory, chain factory, woolen cloth factory, iron foundry, tannery, and glove manufacturer.
Warner sits in central New Hampshire, approximately nineteen miles northwest of Concord, the state capital. The town is home to Rollins State Park and Mount Kearsarge State Forest. Mount Kearsarge, elevation 2,937 feet, is the highest point in both Warner and Merrimack County and a popular hiking destination. Each October, Warner hosts the annual Fall Foliage Festival on Columbus Day weekend, attracting thousands of visitors from throughout New England and beyond.
