West St. Paul is a city in Dakota County, Minnesota, located immediately south of Saint Paul and west of South St. Paul. With a population of 20,615 at the 2020 census, the city has grown steadily, adding over 1,000 residents since 2010. The city's name reflects its geographic position on the west bank of the Mississippi River, though a persistent myth claims it was named for being west of South St. Paul—a story created in the mid-twentieth century that has endured despite its inaccuracy.
The history of West St. Paul is marked by territorial complexity. The current city sits where a previous West St. Paul once existed, partially overlapping what is now Saint Paul's Lower West Side. Saint Paul annexed that original West Side in part to aid law enforcement and eliminate tolls on the Wabasha Street Bridge. The independent city of West St. Paul continued in Dakota County from 1874 until 1887, when South St. Paul was incorporated in its place. Just two years later, in 1889, the current city of West St. Paul separated from South St. Paul and reclaimed its historic name.
