Maplewood, located in Ramsey County just ten minutes' drive from downtown Saint Paul, has grown into a vibrant suburban community of over 42,000 residents. The city stretches along the northern and eastern borders of Saint Paul, creating its distinctive L-shaped geography that originated from the city's gradual annexation of surrounding land beginning in the 1850s.
Before European settlement in the 1840s, the area was home to multiple indigenous peoples, including Dakota tribes who arrived in the 18th century during the Woodland period. European settlers began arriving in the 1850s, and a stagecoach line connected Saint Paul to Duluth from 1856 until the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad was completed in 1870. When Minnesota achieved statehood in 1858, the area was organized under McLean and New Canada Townships, with the town site of Gladstone platted in 1887.
The city's modern identity took shape in the 1950s. In 1955, the 3M Corporation completed the first buildings of its central research laboratory in Maplewood, fundamentally transforming the community. Threatened with annexation by Saint Paul, the area incorporated as a village in 1957 by a vote of five to one, with a population of 14,200. This incorporation also allowed 3M to benefit from the village's lower tax base. From the 1950s onward, Maplewood evolved from rural farmsteads into suburban neighborhoods, marked by the opening of the 125-acre Maplewood Mall in 1974 and St. John's Hospital in 1985. Today, the city remains home to 3M's corporate headquarters and main campus.
