Roseville is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, located in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. As one of only two suburbs that border both Saint Paul and Minneapolis, it occupies a unique position in the region. According to the 2020 census, Roseville had a population of 36,254.
The land where Roseville now stands was originally home to the Dakota and Ojibwe peoples before white settlers arrived in 1843. Native Americans had left the area by 1862. Rose Township was established in 1858, named after Isaac Rose, one of the first settlers. The township initially encompassed a much larger area, including present-day Lauderdale and Falcon Heights, along with portions of what are now Saint Paul and Minneapolis. Over time, Saint Paul's expansion and boundary adjustments with Hennepin County gradually reduced the township's size. In the 1870s and 1880s, a small settlement called Roseville developed near a farmstead owned by Jacob F. True, president of the Ramsey County Agricultural Society. The city experienced rapid growth through the 1930s and 1940s, leading to its incorporation as a village in 1948. Ray Goneau served as Roseville's first police chief, holding the position until 1977.
Today, Roseville covers 13.84 square miles and is traversed by Interstate Highway 35W and Minnesota Highways 36, 51, and 280. The 45th parallel runs through the city, with a marker at the intersection of Cleveland Avenue and Loren Road.
