North Saint Paul is a city in Ramsey County, Minnesota, located east-northeast of Saint Paul, with a population of 12,364 according to the 2020 census. Originally called Castle, the city was laid out in 1887 by Henry Anson Castle when the Wisconsin Central Railroad was extended to the area. Unlike many suburbs composed of new developments, North Saint Paul retains much of its older character, including a historic downtown area featuring brick storefronts that reflect its established heritage.
The city is home to several notable landmarks and institutions. Neumann's Bar, located in the historic downtown, holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating bar in Minnesota, having opened for business in 1887 and remaining in operation ever since, even during Prohibition when it served near beer downstairs and operated a speakeasy upstairs. Visitors can still view the keyhole door used to screen entrants and the vintage telephone that connected the upstairs and downstairs areas. Another iconic symbol is the North Saint Paul Snowman, a 20-ton structure serving as the city's official logo. Constructed between 1971 and 1974 by Lloyd Koesling on Margaret and 7th Streets, it was relocated to its current location on the east side of the Margaret Street bridge over Minnesota State Highway 36 in 1990.
