Walpole, a town in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, is home to 3,633 residents according to the 2020 census. The town's central village, where 573 people live, sits east of New Hampshire Route 12 and serves as the Walpole census-designated place. The community also encompasses the villages of North Walpole and Drewsville.
Founded in 1736 as "Number 3," the third in a line of Connecticut River fort towns, Walpole was settled early and initially called Great Falls or Lunenburg. Colonel Benjamin Bellows, who gave his name to Bellows Falls, Vermont, constructed a large fort here for protection against Native attacks. After the border between Massachusetts and New Hampshire was established, the town received a new grant as "Bellowstown" and was incorporated in 1756. In 1761, it was renamed Walpole in honor of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain's first Prime Minister.
The town holds significant historical distinction as the site of the first bridge across the Connecticut River, completed in 1785 and regarded as one of America's most famous early spans. Walpole Academy, built in 1831 and attributed to master-builder Aaron Prentiss Howland, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The town's abundant lilacs inspired author Louisa May Alcott to write Under the Lilacs in 1878. The Alcott family lived in Walpole beginning in 1855 before moving to Concord, Massachusetts, in 1857.
