Fitzwilliam is a town in Cheshire County, New Hampshire, with a population of 2,351 according to the 2020 census. Originally granted as Monadnock No. 4 in 1752 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth as part of a series of eight towns settled by Scottish colonists, the town was incorporated in 1773 and named for William Fitzwilliam, 4th Earl Fitzwilliam, cousin of Governor John Wentworth. The community has deep roots in American history, having counted among its early grantees Matthew Thornton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and James Reed, who would lead the 3rd New Hampshire Regiment at Bunker Hill.
Fitzwilliam's economy was historically built on diverse industries including granite quarrying, one of the oldest operations of its kind in the state, along with woodworking and yarn-making. The railroad arrived in 1848, further connecting the town to regional commerce. Today, the town is perhaps best known for Rhododendron State Park, a 16-acre grove of native rhododendrons that blooms spectacularly each mid-July. The picturesque town common, surrounded by twelve antique houses, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Little Monadnock Mountain, at 1,883 feet, marks the town's highest point in its western section and draws hikers via the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail and a shorter route from the state park.
