Marlow is a town in Cheshire County in southwestern New Hampshire, with a population of 749 as of the 2020 census. The area is home to Honey Brook State Forest and sits within the Connecticut River watershed, drained by the Ashuelot River. The town's landscape bears the marks of glacial activity, with its northeastern corner reaching the summit of Huntley Mountain at an elevation of 1,978 feet.
The town was first granted in 1753 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth under the name "Addison," honoring writer Joseph Addison, who had signed papers appointing the governor's father as lieutenant-governor of New Hampshire. The French and Indian War discouraged settlement, so the town was regranted in 1761 to William Noyes and sixty-nine others, mostly from Lyme, Connecticut. It was then renamed after Marlow, England, a town on the River Thames in Buckinghamshire.
During the nineteenth century, Marlow developed a robust industrial economy centered on the Ashuelot River's water power. By 1859, when the population stood at 708, the town supported seven sawmills, a gristmill, a carriage shop, a tin shop, and two tanneries that produced tools, furniture, wooden buckets, and leather goods from locally harvested lumber. Farming also flourished on the town's rocky but productive soil, with hay, grain, and vegetables as principal crops. Marlow was once the home of PC Connection, a notable business that later became known simply as Connection.
