Tannersville, nestled in Pocono Township in Monroe County, began as a settlement around 1750 when John Larner, a former Philadelphia resident, established what was originally called Pocono Point. The village's frontier importance is underscored by Learned's Tavern, established along the Lackawanna Trail. This historic building, which operated most recently as The 1740 Alpine Inn before burning down in 2000, held special significance as the last frontier building in 1779. That same year, General John Sullivan and his soldiers camped at the tavern before cutting a road through the wilderness that would become Sullivan's Trail. Today, Tannersville has evolved into a modern destination while maintaining its historical character. The village is home to the Camelback Mountain Resort, a major ski and waterpark attraction in the Poconos region, as well as the Pocono Premium Outlets. With an elevation of 883 feet, Tannersville also boasts the Tannersville Cranberry Bog, the southernmost boreal bog in the Eastern United States. As of 2000, the village had a population of 2,784.
