Stroudsburg is the county seat of Monroe County, Pennsylvania, located in the heart of the Pocono Mountains approximately five miles from the Delaware Water Gap. Colonel Jacob Stroud laid out the town in 1799, building on his family's mid-18th century settlement. Stroudsburg was formally incorporated on February 5, 1815. The borough carries a complex history that includes the tragic 1894 lynching of Richard Puryear, a Black railroad worker accused of murder who was killed by a white mob after escaping from prison. Despite a grand jury investigation, no one was ever charged or convicted for his death.
