The Pocono Manor Inn itself was constructed in nine sections spanning from 1902 to 1949. The seven earliest sections, built between 1902 and 1926, were designed by noted Philadelphia architect Walter Smedley, whose work helped establish the resort's distinctive character. The historic district encompasses seventy-five contributing buildings along with supporting structures and objects across the property, distributed across Pocono Township and Tobyhanna Township. In recognition of its architectural and historical significance, the Pocono Manor Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
In November 2019, the Pocono Manor Inn experienced a devastating wind-driven fire that destroyed the historic structure. The fire occurred around 6:30 a.m. on November 2, though the exact cause remains unknown. Despite this loss, the historic district's remaining cottages and structures continue to represent an important example of early twentieth-century resort architecture and community planning in northeastern Pennsylvania.
