South Effingham is one of four villages within the town of Effingham, a community in Carroll County, New Hampshire that has grown steadily over recent decades. The town itself was settled in the early colonial period by members of the Leavitt family from Hampton, New Hampshire, led by Captain John Leavitt. Originally known as Leavitt's Town, the settlement was granted land by Governor Benning Wentworth in 1749 and renamed Effingham in honor of the Howard family, Earls of Effingham, who were connected to the Wentworths through marriage. The town was formally incorporated in 1778. South Effingham sits in the southern portion of town, where Pine River State Forest is located. The broader Effingham area experienced significant industrial development by the mid-nineteenth century. By 1859, Effingham Falls had become a small mill town with a woolen factory, five sawmills, three gristmills, and a carriage factory. The region's geography has made it historically important for water resources and land use. Much of Effingham's land serves as aquifer recharge areas, and the Ossipee River subwatershed, which partially flows through town, is home to the largest stratified-drift aquifer in New Hampshire. Today, the town is accessible by state routes 25 and 153, and its population continues to grow, reaching 1,691 residents at the 2020 census.
