Ossipee is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire, with a population of 4,372 at the 2020 census and the distinction of being the county seat. The town's name comes from the Ossipee Indians, one of twelve Algonquian tribes who originally inhabited the area. Originally called Wigwam Village and then New Garden, Ossipee was officially incorporated as a town on February 22, 1785. The area was once home to an Indian stockade fort built to protect the tribe from the Mohawks, which was destroyed in 1725 and then rebuilt by Captain John Lovewell as one of the largest forts in New England.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Ossipee developed as an agricultural and industrial center. Though the terrain is rough, rocky, and mountainous, farmers successfully raised cattle and grew wheat and potatoes. By 1859, when the population reached 2,123, the town supported twelve sawmills, five gristmills, twelve clapboard and shingle mills, plus factories and tanneries. The arrival of the Portsmouth, Great Falls & Conway Railroad in 1871, extended to Center Ossipee by 1875, transformed the town into a summer resort destination, bringing commerce and tourists until passenger service ended in 1961.
Ossipee holds a unique place in automotive history as the claimed home of the first snowmobile. In 1917, Virgil D. White developed a conversion kit that transformed the Ford Model T into a snowmobile and copyrighted the term itself. His patent was applied for in 1918, and his conversion kit became available through Ford dealerships starting in 1922. Today, Ossipee remains a resort area encompassing several villages and part of Pine River State Forest.
