Moultonborough is a town in Carroll County, New Hampshire with a population of 4,918 according to the 2020 census, representing growth from 4,044 residents in 2010. The town's name originates from its first European settlers, grantees from Hampton, New Hampshire, among whom were at least sixteen Moultons. The town was chartered in 1763 by colonial Governor Benning Wentworth and officially incorporated on November 27, 1777, following its first recorded town meeting on March 31 of that year. Jonathan Moulton, who would later become a brigadier general and was considered one of the richest men in the province at the start of the American Revolution, served as the first elected town clerk.
Moultonborough's geography is defined largely by water, with Lake Winnipesaukee bounding much of the town to the southwest and Squam Lake touching the northwestern corner. The town encompasses 75.1 square miles, with water comprising over twenty percent of its area. Mount Shaw, elevation 2,990 feet and part of the Ossipee Mountains, represents the town's highest point. Today, Moultonborough is home to the Castle in the Clouds, a popular tourist attraction. This stone mansion, known as Lucknow, was built between 1913 and 1914 by shoe manufacturer Thomas Gustave Plant on 6,300 acres and designed by the Boston architectural firm J. Williams Beal & Sons, offering sweeping views of Lake Winnipesaukee. The town includes the census-designated place of Suissevale and the community of Lees Mill.
