Center Sandwich is a small census-designated place in the town of Sandwich in Carroll County, New Hampshire, with a population of 156 as of the 2020 census. The village center and its surrounding historic area are recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as the Center Sandwich Historic District. Each year, Center Sandwich draws visitors for the Sandwich Fair, held annually in early October.
The village's history traces back to the late eighteenth century. In 1768, Daniel Beede constructed a gristmill on the banks of the Red Hill River, followed by a sawmill in 1780. These early industries attracted settlement to the area, and roads were subsequently built to serve the growing community. Between 1790 and 1820, the population of the village and surrounding rural town expanded from about 900 people to over 2,000. Most of Center Sandwich's significant development occurred in the years before the Civil War, producing a collection of residential and civic buildings predominantly styled in vernacular Federal and Greek Revival architecture. The oldest surviving structure is the Baptist church, built in 1792 originally in Federal style before later receiving Greek Revival modifications. However, the absence of railroad service to the area led to the village's decline in importance following the Civil War, and relatively few changes occurred during the twentieth century.
