Ramona is a small city in Marion County, Kansas, situated in the scenic Flint Hills and Great Plains region southwest of Herington. As of the 2020 census, the city is home to 78 residents. The name Ramona carries Spanish origins, a legacy of the area's historical ownership. Land grants in the Ramona area trace back to Spanish colonial times, when in 1799 a New Orleans merchant named Manuel De Lisa petitioned for a large land grant in the region.
The modern history of Ramona took shape after Marion County was established in 1855 within the Kansas Territory. A significant development came in 1887 when the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway constructed a main line from Herington through Ramona to Pratt, with the line later extended to Liberal and eventually reaching Tucumcali, New Mexico and El Paso, Texas. That same year, a post office was established in Ramona on August 9. The railroad changed hands multiple times over the decades, eventually becoming part of Union Pacific Railroad, though local residents still commonly refer to it as the Rock Island. Today, the community is served by Centre USD 397 public school district and remains connected to the region through local media including the Herington Times newspaper and Marion County Record.
