Peabody is a city located in Marion County, Kansas, situated between Newton and Florence along U.S. Route 50. According to the 2020 census, the city has a population of 937 residents. The town was named in 1871 after F.H. Peabody of Boston, who served as vice-president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
The area's settlement began in earnest in 1870 when a colony of settlers from Wisconsin arrived in September, initially establishing a town called Coneburg. However, land disputes and claim jumping led settlers to relocate, and in spring 1871, T.M. Potter and five others established the Peabody town company on land with clear title. The town was officially platted in June 1871, and a post office followed that October. When legal troubles caused Coneburg to become North Peabody in 1872, the two communities eventually merged into the city of Peabody in 1879.
The railroad played a crucial role in Peabody's development. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway extended its main line through Peabody to Newton in 1871, with regular passenger service continuing through the decades. In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a branch line through the city, further establishing Peabody as a transportation hub and destination for foreign homesteaders.
Today, Peabody is known throughout the region for its historic 1880s downtown main street and its annual Independence Day Celebration on July 4th, traditions that reflect the community's rich heritage and continued vitality.
