Goessel is a small city in Marion County, Kansas, with a population of 556 as of the 2020 census. Located about eleven miles north of North Newton on the west side of K-15 highway, the city carries a distinctive name. It was named after Captain Kurt von Goessel, a ship captain who perished in 1895 when his steamship, the Elbe, was rammed and sank in the English Channel.
The area's rich history is deeply connected to Russian Mennonite immigration. Beginning in 1874, Plautdietsch-speaking Mennonites from the Russian Empire arrived in south-central Kansas, seeking to preserve their religious heritage and freedom. The Alexanderwohl group, who sailed aboard the ship Cimbria, settled in the area around present-day Goessel. They initially established themselves in eight communal villages, including Gnadenfeld, located where Goessel now stands. As families eventually moved onto their own larger parcels of land, a trading center gradually developed.
The first public structure in Goessel was the Mennonite Brethren church, erected in 1890, followed by a creamery station that same year and a mercantile store in 1891. Dr. Peter Richert, inspired by the story of Captain von Goessel, submitted the city's name to the U.S. Postal Department, and it was accepted on April 13, 1895. The city was officially platted in 1910 with one hundred residents and incorporated in 1952. Today, Goessel remains home to the Mennonite Heritage Museum and Bethesda Mennonite Hospital, preserving the community's cultural and historical legacy.
