Durham is a small city in Marion County, Kansas, with a population of 89 residents according to the 2020 census. The city took its name from Durham cattle and sits about 8.5 miles north of Hillsboro on the west side of K-15 highway next to a railroad. The area has deep historical roots, with the Cottonwood River having been explored by Zebulon Pike's expedition in 1806 as it passed through Marion County. The famous Santa Fe Trail, one of the most significant land routes in United States history, ran about one mile northwest of Durham and remained active across Marion County from 1821 to 1866. A post office was first established in Durham Park in 1874, then relocated to the community of Durham in 1887 when the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line through the area. That railroad, later taken over by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, became central to Durham's identity and is still referred to by locals as the "Rock Island." Durham incorporated as a city in 1906. In 1962, the Donahue Corporation was established, manufacturing farm implement carriers and eventually growing to a 40,000 square foot facility. Today, Durham remains rooted in the scenic Flint Hills and Great Plains, with the Santa Fe Trail segments nearby recognized on the National Register of Historic Places.
