Johnstown is a home rule municipality straddling Weld and Larimer counties in Colorado, with a 2020 population of 17,303. The town began with Harvey J. Parish's vision in 1902, when he purchased land for eleven dollars per acre near the route of the Great Western Railway. Parish platted his original ten-acre vision with modest twenty-five-by-one-hundred-forty-foot lots and named the main thoroughfare Greeley Avenue Public Road. Incorporated in 1907, the town took its name from Parish's son, John, fulfilling Parish's simple desire to create "my son's town." John Parish would later serve as Mayor from 1929 to 1934.
Johnstown sits just west of where the Big Thompson River meets the Little Thompson River, positioned about ten miles west-southwest of Greeley and nine miles southeast of Loveland.
