Harrison, a town in Cumberland County, Maine, has deep roots in early American history and maritime commerce. Originally granted as Otis Field Plantation in 1771 to reward service in the 1690 Battle of Quebec, the area was incorporated as Otisfield in 1797. Harrison itself was established on March 8, 1805, carved from portions of Otisfield and Bridgton and named after principal landowner Harrison Gray Otis of Boston. The town's first permanent settler, John Carsley, arrived in 1793 and cleared land for farming and industry.
Harrison's character was shaped by water power and transportation. Mills and manufacturing businesses flourished along Crystal Lake's outlet into Long Lake, including sawmills, gristmills, and later a woolen mill. The opening of the Cumberland and Oxford Canal in 1832 transformed Harrison into a major trade center, with the canal's 27 locks connecting Portland to Sebago Lake and continuing to Long Lake. Steamboats began operating in 1847, and Harrison became a popular summer resort destination with the opening of The Elms Inn in 1860 and the Harrison Hotel in 1906.
When the Portland and Ogdensburg Railroad reached the area in 1870, the canal became obsolete, but the Bridgton and Saco River Railroad continued serving the town from 1898. Today, Harrison remains a recreational hub straddling Long Lake and Crystal Lake, with a population of 2,447 as of the 2020 census. The Historic Deertrees Theatre, built in 1936, continues to host performances and cultural events that draw visitors to this historic community.
