Gray is a town in Cumberland County, Maine with a population of 8,269 as of the 2020 census. Located at the intersection of state Routes 4, 26, 100, 115, and 202, as well as Maine Turnpike exit 63, Gray sits midway between Portland and Lewiston, Maine's two largest cities. The town is part of both the Portland-South Portland-Biddeford and Lewiston-Auburn metropolitan areas. Gray's geography includes frontage on Little Sebago Lake, Crystal Lake, and Forest Lake, with the landscape drained by Collyer Brook.
The area was granted in 1736 and first settled in 1738, though early growth was disrupted by attacks during the French and Indian Wars. After being resettled in 1751 and again devastated in 1755, Fort Gray was constructed that same year to protect inhabitants. The town was officially incorporated as Gray on June 19, 1778, taking its name from proprietor Thomas Gray.
Gray developed a diverse economy centered on farming, sawmills, quarries, and various manufacturing enterprises. Most notably, Samuel Mayall established the first successful water-powered woolen mill in North America along Collyer Brook in 1791, smuggling machinery plans from England despite the British woolen guilds' attempts to prevent colonial competition. The mill operated under his daughters' management after his death in 1831, closing in 1902. Today, visitors can view the ruins of the mill and associated structures.
Currently, Gray is home to the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife headquarters, which operates a fish hatchery and wildlife park, as well as the Gray/Portland Weather Forecast Office of the National Weather Service.
