We Do It Right — Every Time

We Pay What We Quote — Guaranteed

Some car-buying services quote you high to get you interested, then the driver shows up and suddenly there's a problem with the catalytic converter or the transmission mounts and the offer drops by $300. We've heard this story from Bailey Island customers dozens of times. Our quote is based on an honest assessment, and that's the number we show up with — period.

A Little About Bailey Island

The Story of Bailey Island, ME

Bailey Island is an island in Casco Bay, part of the town of Harpswell in Cumberland County, Maine. As of the 2020 census, the island had a year-round population of 363 people. Nearly three miles long and less than a mile wide, Bailey Island features a rocky shoreline and multiple inlets as part of an archipelago that includes Orr's Island and Sebascodegan Island.

The island's history begins with the Abenaki Native Americans, who called it Newaggin. European settlers arrived in the 18th century, with William Black, son of a freed slave from Kittery, becoming the first permanent settler around 1727. The island later took its name from Reverend Timothy Bailey, who acquired it in 1742, though the exact circumstances remain unclear. By 1776, Bailey Island had nine structures according to a Royal Navy chart.

Tourism flourished after 1861 when Harriet Beecher Stowe's novel The Pearl of Orr's Island sparked interest in Casco Bay. Steamboat ferry services connected the island to mainland communities from 1881 onward, though economic pressures led to bankruptcy during World War I. The iconic Bailey Island Bridge, the world's only remaining cribstone bridge, was completed in 1928, allowing tidal flow to pass freely underneath.

Bailey Island has produced notable residents and witnessed significant events. Edmund Black, who grew up here, won an Olympic bronze medal in 1928. Carl Jung delivered his first American lectures at Bailey Island Library Hall in 1936. The island experienced tragedy in 2020 with Maine's only recorded fatal shark attack. Today, lobster harvesting remains central to the island's economy, with major facilities processing approximately 300,000 pounds annually.
