Gorham is a growing town in Cumberland County, Maine, with a population of 18,336 according to the 2020 census. Originally granted as one of seven townships to soldiers and their heirs following King Philip's War of 1675, the area was first settled in 1736 and formally incorporated as Gorham in 1764. The town was initially called Narragansett Number 7 before being renamed in honor of John Gorham I, a famous New England Ranger.
The town's early development was shaped by its natural advantages. Good soil supported agriculture, while numerous falls provided water power for mills and factories. By the nineteenth century, Gorham had become a manufacturing center producing textiles, clothing, lumber, and various other goods. The Cumberland and Oxford Canal, opened in 1829, initially connected the town to wider markets until the railroad arrived in 1851, transforming commerce and transportation.
Today, Gorham encompasses a central village and several smaller hamlets including South Gorham, West Gorham, and North Gorham. The town is home to one of three campuses of the University of Southern Maine, which evolved from Gorham Academy, founded in 1803. While its industrial base has significantly diminished, Gorham has increasingly become a bedroom community for Portland, attracting new residents and developments. In 2013, the town was voted second-best in Maine by a financial website.
