Fort Bayard is an unincorporated community located in Grant County, New Mexico. The community holds significance in American military and educational history. In 1888, Kentucky-born chaplain Allen Allensworth arrived at Fort Bayard with his regiment, where he worked as a military educator. The following year, Allensworth published the Outline of Course of Study, and The Rules Governing Post Schools of Ft. Bayard, N.M., a document that went on to become a standard for military education. That same year, 1888, United States Army officer Geoffrey Keyes was born at Fort Bayard. Keyes would later gain prominence for his service in Italy during World War II. The community continued to produce notable figures in the twentieth century, with Supreme Court judge Harry Stowers born there in 1926. Today, Fort Bayard experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot summers and mild winters, which has long shaped life in this part of Grant County.
