Arenas Valley is a census-designated place located in Grant County, New Mexico. According to the 2020 census, the community had a population of 1,291 residents. The place takes its official name from the Rio de Arenas, a normally dry arroyo or gully that runs nearby. However, locals have long called the largest waterway that passes through the built-up area of Arenas Valley by a different name: Whiskey Creek. This colorful local name comes from a well-known legend in the community. According to the story, a heavy rain in the nearby Piños Altos Mountains once flooded an illegal still, and whiskey barrels came floating down the arroyo through the heart of the settlement. Though Arenas Valley no longer has a post office, having operated one only from January 1, 1946, to March 7, 1987, the community maintains its own ZIP code, 88022. The Arenas Valley Water Association continues to serve residents today.
