Central Falls, located in Providence County, Rhode Island, is a city of remarkable distinction. With a population of 22,583 at the 2020 census spread across just 1.29 square miles, it stands as the smallest and most densely populated city in the nation's smallest state. The city takes its name from a waterfall on the Blackstone River that flows through it.
Central Falls has deep historical roots, with the area originally inhabited by Nipmuc, Wampanoag, and Narragansett peoples. The city achieved historic significance as the site of a major battle during King Philip's War on March 26, 1676, when Narragansett Indians ambushed Plymouth Colony troops, resulting in nearly all being killed. In the 18th century, Captain Stephen Jenks established a trip hammer and blacksmith shop along the Blackstone River, which evolved into a manufacturing hub once known as Chocolateville. In 1824, Jenks proposed the name Central Falls, and the city was officially incorporated in 1895 after splitting from Lincoln.
The city has long been defined by immigration and diversity. Early Quaker settlers were followed by arrivals from Ireland, Scotland, and French Canada. By the 20th century, Central Falls had experienced explosive growth and became the nation's most densely populated city.
