Temple is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire with a population of 1,382 according to the 2020 census. The area was originally called Peterborough Slip before being incorporated in 1768 by colonial Governor John Wentworth, who named it after his lieutenant governor, John Temple. Among the first settlers were Maj. Ephraim Heald and his wife Sarah, along with his brother Deacon Peter Heald and cousin Oliver Heald, who arrived in 1758. Peter Heald is generally considered the town's founder, and his son was the first male child born in Temple. The town developed into a small industrial center, with Temple Glassworks founded in 1780 by Robert Hewes of Boston. Though the glassworks no longer operates, surviving examples of Temple glass have become rare and valued collectibles. By 1859, the town supported a population of 579 and included two sawmills, one gristmill, and a tannery. Temple's elevated terrain with uneven, rocky ground commands distant views to the east and south. The town covers 22.5 square miles and is drained by Blood Brook and Temple Brook, which are part of the Souhegan River watershed. The highest elevation reaches 2,190 feet above sea level on an eastern spur of South Pack Monadnock Mountain. Temple Mountain, at 2,045 feet, forms the town's western boundary for several miles and is now home to Temple Mountain State Reservation, formerly the Temple Mountain Ski Area. The town of Temple, Maine was later named after Temple, New Hampshire.
