Peterborough, a town of 6,418 residents located in Hillsborough County, sits along the Contoocook River at the intersection of U.S. Route 202 and New Hampshire Route 101, positioned 38 miles west of Manchester and 72 miles northwest of Boston. Granted by Massachusetts in 1737 and first permanently settled in 1749, the town was incorporated on January 17, 1760, by Governor Benning Wentworth and named after Lieutenant Peter Prescott, a prominent land speculator from Concord, Massachusetts. Despite attacks during the French and Indian War, the settlement grew steadily, reaching fifty families by 1759.
Peterborough flourished as a mill town, with the Contoocook River and Nubanusit Brook providing abundant waterpower. The first cotton factory opened in 1810, and by 1859, the town supported four additional cotton factories, a woolen mill, paper mills, an iron foundry, machine shops, and numerous other industrial enterprises. The town earned national distinction as the home of America's first tax-supported free public library, established in 1833. This pioneering institution inspired New Hampshire to authorize all towns to establish their own publicly funded libraries in 1849. Throughout the twentieth century, Peterborough developed a vibrant cultural life, hosting the summer theatre Mariarden and later the Peterborough Folkway, which became an essential venue for East Coast folk musicians. In the 1980s, the town gained recognition as a major publishing hub, producing over 100 magazines focused on computers and technology, including Byte and MacComputing.
