Lyndeborough is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, with a population of 1,702 according to the 2020 census. The area has deep roots in New England history, originally granted by the Massachusetts General Court to veterans of the region's first war with Canada, when it was known as Salem-Canada. John Cram and his family became the town's first settlers, establishing a sawmill in 1736. The name Lyndeborough came later, from a re-grant to proprietors including Benjamin Lynde, who would go on to become Chief Justice of Massachusetts. Though Lynde held the title of proprietor, he never lived in or apparently visited the town, instead presiding over cases in Suffolk County, Massachusetts, including the trial resulting from the Boston Massacre.
The town spans 30.5 square miles across rolling terrain dotted with notable summits including Winn Mountain, Rose Mountain, and The Pinnacle. Water from the central and southern portions flows via Stony Brook and Curtis Brook toward the Souhegan River, while northern waters drain through Cold Brook into the South Branch Piscataquog River. New Hampshire Route 31 passes through town, connecting Lyndeborough to neighboring Greenfield and Wilton.
Lyndeborough preserves its heritage through several historic sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including Citizens' Hall, which opened in 1889, and the Lyndeborough Center Historic District featuring a circa-1836 Congregational church, an 1846 town hall, and the remains of a 1774 town pound.
