Mont Vernon is a town in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire with a population of 2,584 as of the 2020 census, up from 2,409 in 2010. The town broke away from neighboring Amherst in 1803 following a dispute over the town parish, and later added a small portion of Lyndeborough. Originally settled for agriculture, Mont Vernon's farms struggled after the Civil War when railroads opened better farming land in the Midwest. The town's population peaked in 1870 before beginning to decline.
By the late 1890s, Mont Vernon had transformed into a tourist destination, attracting summer visitors from Boston and points south seeking relief from the heat. At its height, the town boasted five large summer hotels, including the Grand Hotel on Grand Hill, along with numerous boarding houses. This prosperity faded with the automobile, which allowed tourists to reach more distant destinations like the White Mountains, and was ultimately destroyed by the Great Depression. The population bottomed out at barely 300 in 1930, and all the hotels were demolished or destroyed by fire by World War II.
Since the war, Mont Vernon has gradually become a suburban community, a trend significantly accelerated in the early 1960s when employees of Sanders Associates in Nashua found homes here attractive. Agriculture has largely disappeared, though the town still maintains one dairy farm. The town retains one general store that has operated for more than 120 years in the same location, except for a two-year closure from 2010 to 2012. Mont Vernon is served by New Hampshire Route 13, which runs north to south through the center of town.
