Taopi is a small city in southern Mower County, Minnesota, situated near the source of the Wapsipinicon River. The current population stands at 68 residents as of the 2024 US Census. The city's name honors Taopi, a Native American chief who befriended settlers following the New Ulm massacre. Platted in 1875 by the Taopi Farming Company under the name of John W. Wood, the settlement developed into a thriving agricultural community. James Olberg purchased the first lot, while J. Martz established a furniture store before relocating his business to Le Roy. Taopi became home to the largest steam-powered flour mill in southern Minnesota, an impressive operation capable of processing 300,000 bushels of wheat annually. The city's location on Minnesota State Highway 56 connected it to surrounding communities, lying four miles west of Adams and eight miles southeast of Le Roy. In more recent times, Taopi faced adversity when an EF2 tornado struck on April 12, 2022, as part of a larger North American storm system, causing significant damage to the city though resulting in only two noncritial injuries. Today, this modest community continues as part of Mower County's rural landscape, encompassing 0.39 square miles of land surrounded by Lodi Township.
