Sargeant is a small city located in northern Mower County, Minnesota. The community was platted in 1894, following the extension of the railroad to the area. Situated on a low ridge roughly ten miles northwest of Dexter and nineteen miles northeast of Austin, the county seat, Sargeant occupies just under one square mile of land. The city's geography is shaped by water drainage patterns, with Roberts Creek flowing westward to the Cedar River on one side and the North Branch of the Root River flowing eastward toward the Mississippi River on the other. Sargeant is bordered by Sargeant Township to the north, east, and south, and by Waltham Township to the west. The population has remained modest throughout its history, declining from 76 residents in 2000 to 61 in 2010 and further to 63 by the 2020 census. The community reflects the character of a rural Minnesota town, with a population that is predominantly white and includes a significant proportion of residents aged forty-five and older.
