Rose Creek is a small city in southwestern Mower County, Minnesota, with a population of 397 at the 2020 census. The community's origins trace to 1868, when the railroad was extended to the area and the city was laid out. It took its name from the nearby Rose Creek, a stream that still flows through the northwest corner of the city on its way toward the Cedar River. A post office was established that same year, and the city was formally incorporated in 1899. Located along Minnesota State Highway 56, Rose Creek sits approximately eleven miles southeast of Austin, the county seat, and just eight kilometers from Interstate 90. The city covers just under half a square mile and is surrounded by Windom Township. Rose Creek gained national attention in 1982 when Todd Nelson, an eighteen-year-old high school senior from the community, designed an experiment studying how weightlessness affected insects. His experiment was selected to fly aboard STS-3, the third launch of the Space Shuttle Columbia, making Rose Creek part of America's early space exploration efforts.
