St. George, the county seat of Washington County in southwestern Utah, is the state's fifth-most populous city and the largest outside the Wasatch Front, with a population of 95,342 at the 2020 census. Located on the Arizona-Utah border in the northeasternmost part of the Mojave Desert, the city sits immediately south of the Pine Valley Mountains and slightly northwest of the Colorado Plateau. The St. George metropolitan area is home to approximately 208,000 residents.
The city was founded in 1861 as a cotton mission under the direction of Latter Day Saint apostle Erastus Snow. In response to fears that the American Civil War would disrupt cotton supplies, church leader Brigham Young accelerated colonization efforts, calling about three hundred families to the region at the general church conference in October 1861. Though the settlement never became successful at producing cotton, earning it the nickname "Dixie," the area steadily grew in population. The city was named after George A. Smith, an LDS Church apostle. In April 1877, the LDS Church completed the St. George Utah Temple, the church's third temple and the oldest still in active use today.
Known for its relatively mild climate compared to the rest of Utah, St. George has developed into a regional hub for outdoor recreation, with access to state parks and Zion National Park. The city is home to Utah Tech University, an NCAA Division I institution.
