Gunlock is an unincorporated community in western Washington County, Utah, situated along the Santa Clara River northwest of the Red Mountains and northwest of St. George, the county seat. At an elevation of 3,658 feet, the community maintains its own post office with ZIP code 84733.
The settlement began in 1857 when William "Gunlock Will" Hamblin, a pioneer and brother of Jacob Hamblin, first settled the area. That same year, George Albert Smith, a general authority of the LDS Church, visited and named the community in honor of its founder. Following severe flooding on the Santa Clara River in 1862, the original settlement relocated north to its present location.
Community buildings reflect Gunlock's enduring history. An adobe church and schoolhouse was completed in 1881, serving dual purposes as both a place of worship and education. Classes were held in the building even before its completion. In 1912, this structure was replaced by a new church and schoolhouse. After numerous renovations spanning more than a century, the 1912 building now functions as Gunlock's town hall.
A defining tradition of the community is the Annual Gunlock Rodeo, held traditionally on or around the Fourth of July. This event has taken place annually since 1945 and continues to be an important part of community life, with rodeo revenue supporting local facilities.
