Rosebush is a small village located in Isabella County, Michigan, with a population of 353 residents according to the 2020 census. The village sits within Isabella Township and is entirely contained within the Isabella Indian Reservation, homeland of the federally-recognized Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation.
The story of Rosebush begins in 1844 when Cornelius Bogan established a general store in the area, originally calling the settlement Halfway due to its location approximately midway between Clare and Mount Pleasant. The community gained significant importance in 1868 when the Ann Arbor Railroad extended through the region. During the official platting of the land, resident James Bush negotiated with the railroad, bartering some of his property in exchange for having the station named after his wife, Rose. An additional section of the community was platted in 1873 by Elias B. Calkins and initially named Calkinsville, which became the original post office on July 9, 1873. The post office name changed several times over the following decades, shifting to Rosebush in 1889, back to Calkinsville in 1890, and finally to Rosebush again on February 19, 1903, where it has remained ever since. Today, the village covers a total area of 0.89 square miles, with US Route 127 forming its eastern boundary and providing access via exit 149 at Rosebush Road.
