Mount Pleasant is the county seat of Isabella County in Central Michigan, with a 2020 population of 21,688. The city sits on land that was home to Ojibwa bands, known as the Chippewa, until the mid-19th century. Following federal land policies and the Homestead Act of 1862, European American settlers arrived and built a community. In 1855, under treaty, the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Nation was relocated to the Isabella Indian Reservation, where they remain today. Mount Pleasant developed rapidly as an educational and economic hub. In 1890, W.A. Jordan founded Mount Pleasant Business College, which evolved into Central Michigan University, now one of Michigan's largest universities with 20,000 students at the main campus. The city experienced significant growth following an oil discovery in 1928, when a farm owned by the Lilly family struck oil, producing hundreds of barrels daily.
