Road Forks is an unincorporated community located in western Hidalgo County, New Mexico, in the state's southwestern corner near the Arizona border. Situated at the junction of Interstate 10 and New Mexico State Road 80, the community lies 6.2 miles east of Arizona, due east of Stern's Mountain, and between the towns of Steins, 3 miles to the west, and Lordsburg, 15 miles to the northeast. The community was founded in 1925 by Mr. and Mrs. G. H. Porter, who selected the name Road Forks for their new settlement. In those early years, the growing community supported its own post office, which served residents and travelers passing through the area. This postal service remained in operation for three decades until 1955, when it was discontinued and mail service was consolidated with the larger city of Lordsburg to the northeast. Though Road Forks never incorporated as a city, it developed as a modest waypoint along the important transportation corridor that would eventually become part of the interstate highway system, reflecting the development patterns of the remote borderlands region during the early twentieth century.
