Playas is a census-designated place in Hidalgo County, New Mexico, with a population of 25 as of the 2020 census. Once a vibrant company town, Playas was developed by the Phelps Dodge Corporation in the 1970s to house employees of its new Hidalgo Copper Smelter, located 10 miles to the south. At its peak, the community housed about 1,100 residents and featured over 270 rental homes, apartment buildings, a post office, grocery store, medical clinic with heliport, bowling alley, grill, rodeo arena, horse stables, fitness center, shooting range, airstrip, and swimming pool. The town even maintained its own ZIP code and had two churches built on land leased from the mining company.
The smelter's closure came in 1999 as the company shifted toward new copper processing technologies and faced declining copper prices. Residents were required to leave within a year, though a small crew remained. The facility, situated about 30 miles north of the Mexican border, became known as La Estrella del Norte by migrants who used its lights as a crossing beacon.
Four years later, New Mexico Tech purchased the town and surrounding 1,200 acres for $5 million using Department of Homeland Security funds secured by Senator Pete Domenici. Today, Playas operates as the Playas Training and Research Center, managed by New Mexico Tech's EMRTC. The facility now serves as a training and research hub for the university's first responders, counter-terrorism, and Air Force programs, supported by tens of millions in federal funding.
