Animas is an unincorporated community nestled in the southwestern corner of New Mexico, located in west-central Hidalgo County approximately 30 miles south of Lordsburg, the county seat. As of the 2020 census, the community had a population of 180 residents. Despite its unincorporated status, Animas has maintained a post office since 1909, serving the area with the ZIP code 88020.
The town sits at an elevation of 4,406 feet at the intersection of State Roads 9 and 338, positioned in a valley bounded by the Peloncillo Mountains to the west and the Pyramid and Animas Mountains to the east. This isolated ranching community lies just west of the Continental Divide, with smaller nearby communities including Cotton City, Playas, and Rodeo.
Animas has deep historical roots, having been founded around 1753 by Spanish settlers. The community became part of Mexico in 1821 and later acquired a unique distinction when it was included in the Gadsden Purchase of 1853, making it one of the few areas in New Mexico that was not part of the Mexican Cession following the Mexican-American War. The region boasts rich Native American heritage, with twenty-one archaeological sites in the Animas area listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
