Portis is a small city in Osborne County, Kansas, with a population of 86 people according to the 2020 census. The community's history stretches back to 1871, when the first settlement was established with a trading post at the site. The town was officially platted in 1879 under the name Bethany, and the Central Branch Railroad routed through the city, establishing a station there. When the railroad was later sold to the Missouri Pacific Railroad, the station name became problematic because Missouri Pacific already had another Bethany on its system. To avoid confusion with Bethany, Missouri, the decision was made to rename the station Portis, honoring Thomas Jefferson Portis, who served as Vice-President of the Missouri Pacific Railroad and was born in 1827. Today, Portis covers 0.25 square miles and is situated on the north fork of the Solomon River. The city is served by Osborne County USD 392 public school district. Portis High School, which had the Tigers as its mascot, operated in the community until it closed in 1967 through school unification. The population has declined over recent decades, reflecting trends common to many rural Kansas communities, yet Portis continues as an established part of Osborne County's heritage.
