Natoma is a small city in Osborne County, Kansas, situated in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains, approximately 135 miles northwest of Wichita. Established in 1888 and named after a Native American railroad employee by a railroad officer, the name Natoma means "new born." The community's post office originally opened under the name Tapley in December 1878 before being renamed Natoma in July 1890. Natoma was incorporated as a city in 1905 and is located about twenty-five miles southwest of Osborne, the county seat.
The city sits roughly nine miles north of the Saline River, with Paradise Creek, a tributary of the Saline, flowing along its southern edge. K-18 provides transportation through the area, approaching from the west before turning southeast along the city's eastern side. As of the 2020 census, Natoma had a population of 302 residents across 126 households, with a median household income of $64,375.
Education in the community is provided by the Natoma–Paradise–Waldo USD 399 school district, which operates Natoma Elementary School and Natoma High School within the city. The Natoma Tigers have achieved notable success in athletics, winning multiple Kansas State High School championships in boys' basketball, girls' basketball, and boys' cross country.
