Osborne is a city in north-central Kansas and the county seat of Osborne County. Founded in May 1871 by settlers from southeastern Pennsylvania, the town was named after Vincent B. Osborne, a Union Army veteran of the American Civil War. After becoming the permanent county seat in November 1872, Osborne was officially proclaimed a city in May 1873, though the townspeople did not successfully incorporate a government until 1878, the same year a bridge was built over the Solomon River. The word "City" was eventually dropped from the town's name by the mid-1890s.
Located at the intersection of U.S. Routes 24 and 281, Osborne sits on the north side of the South Fork Solomon River in the Smoky Hills region of the Great Plains, approximately 134 miles northwest of Wichita. The Osborne Canal, part of the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation's Webster Unit Project, runs along the city's northern edge. According to the 2020 census, Osborne had a population of 1,335 residents. The community experiences a typical Great Plains climate, with July being the warmest month and January the coldest and driest. The city has recorded temperature extremes ranging from 116 degrees Fahrenheit in 1940 to minus 31 degrees in 1989. Today, Osborne remains a small prairie community where education, health care, and wholesale trade form important parts of the local economy.
