Poland is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, with a population of 5,906 at the 2020 census. Set among rolling hills and numerous lakes, Poland has evolved into a community rich with history and natural beauty. Poland began as an agricultural community and later attracted industry through its water power sites. By 1859, the town supported four sawmills, a gristmill, a tannery, and a carriage factory. The arrival of the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad sparked further development and tourism. The town's greatest fame came through Poland Spring, which developed after Hiram Ricker proclaimed that a mineral spring on his family's property had cured his dyspepsia. The Poland Spring House opened on July 4, 1876, atop Ricker's Hill at an elevation of 800 feet, with views to the White Mountains. This luxurious spa hotel, designed by renowned architects and accommodating 450 guests, attracted prominent visitors including General Benjamin Butler, Senator James G. Blaine, and entertainers like Joan Crawford and Jimmy Durante. Today, Poland Spring water continues to be bottled and sold nationally.
