Livermore Falls is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, with a population of 3,060 at the 2020 census. The area has deep historical roots, once part of the Abenaki Indian territory called Rockemeka, meaning "great corn place." Granted by the General Court of Massachusetts in 1771 as Port Royal to heirs of veterans from the 1710 campaign against the Acadian capital, the area was settled in 1786 and incorporated as Livermore in 1795, named after Deacon Elijah Livermore, one of the first English settlers. The town's eastern portion was set off as East Livermore in 1844 and eventually became part of Androscoggin County in 1854, taking the name Livermore Falls in 1929.
In its early years, the region thrived as farmland with apple orchards and dairies supplying Boston and Portland markets, earning recognition for fine cattle. As the nineteenth century progressed, the Androscoggin River's fourteen-foot falls powered gristmills, sawmills, and logging operations. The arrival of the Androscoggin Railroad in 1852 transformed Livermore Falls into a small mill town, attracting shoe factories and paper mills, including the Umbagog Pulp Company started by Hugh J. Chisholm. In 1897, the Third Bridge was constructed across the Androscoggin River, measuring 800 feet in length and standing as the longest single-span bridge in New England at that time.
