Lisbon is a town in Androscoggin County, Maine, with a population of 9,711 according to the 2020 census. The town encompasses two villages: Lisbon and Lisbon Falls, and is part of the Lewiston-Auburn metropolitan statistical area.
The community traces its roots to Bowdoin, a township within the Kennebec Purchase. In 1799, the Massachusetts General Court divided Bowdoin into two parts, creating Thompsonborough to address the difficulty residents faced traveling to town meetings. The long name proved unpopular, and in 1802 the town was renamed Lisbon, after the Portuguese city. Lisbon expanded in 1808 when it annexed the remainder of Little River Plantation as Lisbon Falls. A portion of the town was set off as Webster in 1840.
Early industry in Lisbon centered on farming, supported by the town's fertile and easily cultivated soil. Sawmills and gristmills harnessed water power from local streams, and later brick mills were constructed to manufacture textiles. The Worumbo Mill, established in 1864 to produce woolens, became a principal employer for the community until it burned in 1987. Located across 23.82 square miles, Lisbon is drained by the Sabattus River, Little River, and Androscoggin River. The town operates three schools through its school department: Lisbon Community School, Philip W. Sugg Middle School, and Lisbon High School.
